Sleeping in. Duh.
Except… kids don’t. And the second they see snow falling outside, all bets are off. The chaos begins. Blankets get kicked off, noses press against windows, and suddenly everyone is wide awake and ready to live their best snow day life.
And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Growing Up With the Best Snow Days
As a kid, my mom’s family truly did snow days right. My mom is the youngest of seven, and there were 22 grandchildren—so when snow was in the forecast, it was an event.
We’d all pile into cars, pack up our warm clothes and sleds, and make the trip up my grandparents’ massive hill. The goal? To get snowed in together.
Talk about a blast.
Cousins everywhere. Laughter nonstop. Snowball fights. Sledding until your legs were jelly. It was loud, chaotic, and absolutely magical.
And every single snow day started the same way…
Homemade Donuts (Don’t Panic—They’re Easy)

Before you freak out: these are not complicated. Promise.
All you need:
Canned biscuits
Oil
Powdered sugar
A little water
Vanilla (optional, but highly encouraged)
Pour oil into your pan and heat on medium.
When it’s hot, drop in your biscuits. You can cut your donuts however you want. Growing up, we used the lid from a vanilla extract jar to punch a hole in the middle—which gave us donut holes too (elite snack).
As we got older, we realized cooking tiny donut holes was a bit much, so now we just slice the biscuits into thirds. Way easier.
Cook until brown on one side, flip, then pull them out.
Now comes the good part.
The Glaze
Put powdered sugar in a bowl and slowly add the tiniest bit of water until it becomes a glaze consistency. If you want, add a splash of vanilla.
Roll those warm donuts right into the glaze.
Our family used to do cinnamon sugar, but now we’re strictly a glazed donut household. No regrets.
That’s breakfast.Warm. Cozy. Sugary. Perfect.
One Big Outdoor Play Session
After breakfast, we bundle up and head outside.
And here’s our rule:There is no coming in and going back out 47 times.
You get one warm-up break. That’s it.
When we do come inside, everything—socks, gloves, hats, snow pants—goes straight into the dryer so it’s warm and toasty for round two.
And speaking of socks—the warmest socks on planet Earth are Darn Tough merino wool socks. I will die on this hill. If you’ve never tried them, they’re worth every penny. Warm, breathable, and they actually stay dry. A snow day must.
Sledding Tip That Will Change Your Life
Listen to me.
If you spray the bottom of your sled with Pledge dusting spray, you will absolutely FLY.
I’m talking Olympic speed. It’s the most fun (and slightly terrifying) upgrade to any sledding experience. You’ve been warned.
Snow Cream: A Core Memory
If you’ve never made snow cream, you’re missing out.
Grab a big bowl and fill it with fresh snow (not the yellow kind—obviously).
Then add:
Milk
Sugar
Vanilla
Mix until it reaches a snow cone or soft-serve consistency. Adjust to taste. Eat the whole bowl if you want. No judgment here.
It’s simple. It’s nostalgic. It tastes like childhood.
Chili Simmering All Day
Once breakfast is cleaned up, we throw chili into the crockpot and let it do its thing all day long.
No stress. No fancy recipes. Just something warm waiting for us when we finally come in for the night.
As the sun sets, we head inside, peel off the layers, crank the heat, and settle in with bowls of chili.
Snow day perfection.
Snow days don’t have to be elaborate. They don’t have to be Pinterest-worthy. They just have to feel good.
Messy hair. Red cheeks. Warm food. Full hearts.
That’s the magic.
Order quickly so they arrive in time for the big snow!
